Systematize, Service, Expose – Initiatives to bring Data Science into Pharma

As the Center for Pharmaceutical Data Science Education (CPDSE) enters Season 3, we are shifting our focus from internal mobilization toward broader external impact. Our ambition is clear: to be a reliable partner for students, faculty, and the wider pharmaceutical ecosystem.

This season is guided by the theme: “Systematize, Service, Expose.” Having moved beyond our start-up phase, we are now building sustainable systems, delivering tangible services, and showcasing our research and talent to the broader community. Season 3 officially launched with more than 25 colleagues across the two universities committing to concrete deliverables.

1. Systematize: Building a Scalable Foundation

To ensure that data science becomes an integrated and lasting part of pharmaceutical education, we are strengthening both governance and technical infrastructure.

  • Mission Circle
We are strategically leveraging our Agile Hiring Pool and exploring how cross-departmental 15% positions can best support our shared mission.
  • Data Science Facility (DSF)
We are implementing a “Zero-Friction” technical setup, including standardized one-click coding environments (R/Python) and a strong “Clean Code Culture” through GitHub. This ensures that teaching materials are reusable, scalable, and accessible across UCPH and SDU.
  • Communication Circle
We are refining our visual identity and digital presence, including a revised website and professional CPDSE assets, to communicate our mission clearly and consistently.

2. Service: Supporting Faculty and Students

CPDSE exists to strengthen and support the education delivered by our host departments. In Season 3, we are launching service-oriented initiatives designed to reduce the bandwidth challenges often faced by faculty.

  • Education Circle
We are operationalizing our Pharmaceutical Data Science (PDS) Competency Model by collaborating directly with existing courses. Our role is to support course coordinators and teaching teams in integrating data science modules into current curricula.
  • Data Science Happy Hours & Student Code Clubs
We are launching first-line support sessions for students and staff. These peer-to-peer formats provide accessible technical assistance with coding, tools, and platform setup.
  • Teach-the-Teachers
Dedicated workshops and bootcamps will empower faculty with the data science competencies needed for modern pharmaceutical research and development.

3. Expose: Bridging Academia and Industry

We are committed to ensuring that our work is closely aligned with real-world pharmaceutical needs.

  • Research Circle
Through our Talent Pipeline, we connect Master’s students, PhD candidates, and postdocs with industry-relevant projects via exchanges, events, and collaborative initiatives. We are also launching a Methodological Consulting framework focused on method selection, advanced study design, and complex analysis strategies.
  • External Stakeholder Engagement
The Mission and Communication circles are establishing a CPDSE Affiliated Faculty network to strengthen collaboration across academia and industry.
  • Pharma Outreach
We are expanding our external presence through professional forums, publications such as Pharmabladet, and outreach activities including engagement with high school students.

As we systematize and scale, we remain committed to our guiding principle: “Safe Enough to Try.” While building robust systems, we will continue to prioritize timely, practical service and experimentation over perfection.
